Now this is a story all about how Hermitcraft got flipped - turned upside down. And as all your comments have made it imperative, it's time to continue my history narrative. This is the fourth installment of my History of Hermitcraft series. Season 1: The Early Years Season 2: Realizing Potential Season 3: The Professionals Season 4 Feb 2016 through April 2017 (14 months) Minecraft versions 1. 9 (Combat Update), 1. 10 (Frostburn Update) and 1. 11 (Exploration Update). Handy resources: Playlist Hermitcraft Recaps for S4. These are mostly unlisted videos, but as they were all posted here in the subreddit I went through all the old posts and compiled them into a playlist. Renders of S4 builds. Made by u/just_tiscan from the post-season world download. World map at the bottom of the album. Personnel and Meta Season 4 started with a merger between the existing Hermits and most of the Kingdomcraft server. Returning Hermits who released substantial numbers of episodes included Biffa, docm77, Etho, Falsesymmetry, iJevin, ImpulseSV, JoeHills, Mumbo, PythonGB, TangoTek, TinfoilChef, Xisuma, ZombieCleo and Zueljin. Returning Hermits who released very few episodes or only streamed a few times from the server were hypnotizd, Jessassin, Monkeyfarm and xBCrafted. Zueljin's episodes were livestream supercuts but he did release almost 30 of them. Joe's Season 4 was a welcome return after two seasons of very sporadic videos. He returned in style, releasing 186 episodes, more than anyone else on the whitelist. The professional Minecrafters were more professional than ever, with eight of them passing the 100 episode mark and three making it past 150 eps. PythonGB served as the gateway for the Kingdomcraft newcomers, having played on Kingdomcraft himself before moving to Hermitcraft during S3. The newcomers were cubfan135 (US), GoodTimesWithScar (US), iskall85 (Sweden), rendog (S. Afr. /UK) and Welsknight (US). Additionally, the server picked up one more Mindcrack member in VintageBeef (CAN), who joined seven months into the season. Beef was known as the creator of ABBA caving and one of the team that created the UHC style of PVP tournament. Beef did not leave Mindcrack, but as their server was not terribly active at the time he chose to play on Hermitcraft when he felt like starting a vanilla series. The merge with Kingdomcraft had some interesting effects on the server. While Season 2 had seen just as many newcomers, this was the first time that all of the newbies already knew each other and had established their own way of doing things. They also all targeted a slightly younger demographic than the Hermits, resulting in an overall downward shift in the average age of Hermitcraft viewers. It also tilted the tech/builder balance of the server strongly in favor of builders. Those of you who've been following this saga from season 1 will recall that the first whitelist was heavy on the redstoners and very light on aesthetic players. By Season 4 the tech folks were heavily outnumbered by the builders. Lorecrafting also got a big shot in the arm. Season 4 was full of roleplaying and good meaty story arcs. Xisuma and Rendog became the Logfellas and largely drove the storylines forward. However, we also can't forget that this was the season when Iskallium was invented, diorite fell from grace, Moba Lisa was built... sort of..., Tango and Impulse ran amok as the Dangerous Entity Relocation Professionals (DERP), Mumbo was coaxed out of hiding and we played "Hermitron Go" every day. This was the first season with elytras, shulkers, renewable dragon battles and mending books, although rocket-powered flight was not yet available. The Hermits spent a lot of time running about looking like pincushions after using bows and arrows to keep themselves airborne. Builds and Bases Hermitcraft 4 was centered around a particularly large mesa plateau separated by rivers, and is often referred to as the "Mesafied" season, recalling the "Amplified" season that preceded it. The Hermits felt that during Season 3 they had all gotten too spread out and focused on their own bases, erasing any benefit that was gained from playing on a multiplayer server. By condensing everyone into a single mesa biome and delaying the scattering into base building that had occurred in previous years, they kept the collaboration options high for much of the season. Following an idea from Tango, the mesa was divided into color-coded zones similar to the Season 6 main island. However unlike Season 6, Hermits were not constricted to a single building style within the zones. White district: Administrative Blue district: Northern residential Purple district: Southern residential Yellow district: Farms Green district: Industrial Orange district: Entertainment Brown District: Shopping Additionally, Doc and Etho created their own mini-games district called "Dangland", in reference to a famous quote from Doc in Mindcrack UHC 4, " Get to the damn land, man! " (Time: 13:25), misquoted later on in the episode and forever after as "Get to the dang land, man! " While some Hermits eventually started making their own bases late in the season, much of the activity and building was focused on the Mesa. The brown district/shopping district saw the most activity by far, including the DERP skull, Scar's landscaping service in the form of a giant tree, Cleo's rainbow bridge, Joe's art gallery, False's flying squid ink shop, Xisuma's nether portal hub, Impulse's iBooks shop, the Logfellas' Log shop, Cubfan's Wood World, Cubfan's banner shop, Cubfan's mob head shop (shaped like a dragon head), False's pet shop (shaped like a white bunny) and golden carrot shop (shaped like a gold bunny), Xisuma's X-bow shop, Jevin's many tiny market stalls and Cleo's Black Market. The brown district also had a substantial underground mall running beneath a large portion of it, created as a solution when they started running out of space for shops aboveground and the Logfellas started gouging Hermits for the few bits of remaining unoccupied land. About 2/3 of the Hermits lived in the blue residential district and the rest lived in the purple residential district. In the blue district running north to south were the homes of Mumbo, False, Cub, Scar, xBCrafted, Impulse, Iskall, Welsknight, TangoTek, Rendog, TinfoilChef and Zueljin. These folks clustered together in smaller groupings. Mumbo built a big flying drone on top of a packed ice "power beam". On the ground he created an industrial district and an area where he would build creations suggested by his viewers. False's home was a pretty glass jellyfish, topped with a ghast courtesy of DERP. Cubfan built the "Redlands" biome, modeled after Yellowstone National Park. He covered one section entirely with obsidian to mimic volcanic basalt. He created a giant dam, geysers and rainbow pools, and moved an activated crystal from the end to the overworld as an accent. For a house he created his take on the Winchester Mystery House overlooking his custom biome. Next to Cub sat the home base of Scar, who created his Frontier Outpost in a wild west campground theme full of custom trees, tents and trains. He was pranked by False early on with a large statue of Jellie, which he eventually moved to a place of honor in his mines. Moving into the next cluster further south, xBCrafted built a small house in the three episodes he released, which was eventually used as mob storage by Impulse, whose house was next door. Impulse's house was done in quartz and glass, modeled after Tony Stark's mansion in the Iron Man movies. Towards the middle of the season once concrete powder was introduced, he had Scar and False collaborate on the landscaping around the area. Next to Impulse sat Iskall's iskallium mines, a massive underground structure full of railway lines and mysterious nodes of the mythical iskallium, so named following a poll of his fans in order to generate more build-specific lore. To the south was the third cluster of the northern district, including Welsknight's starter home and Tango's castle, with landscaping by Scar. At the center of the map, although still in the blue district, was Rendog's enormous custom "lush mesa" biome, village and house. Finally, at the southern boundary of the blue district was TFC's home, initially modeled after playing cards but eventually replaced by a floating structure made of diamond blocks and glass, next to a model of the DNA helix. Acros the river from this cluster was Zueljin's little house, which remained unfinished after he decided to drop Minecraft from his regular livestream schedule. The southern purple residential district was home to Python, Cleo, Joe, Biffa, Xisuma and VintageBeef again running north to south. Python built a sea town off the shore of the mesa, full of docks and small shops, along with a sea monster. Cleo's base was one of the more recognizable ones, a huge stone tower with a moving eye on the side and a much larger eye built into the ground beneath. Joe was one of the few who didn't base his main operations at the mesa, where he only created a small adobe hut. Biffa built large-scale Minecraft blocks for his base, including a chest and a crafting table. Xisuma's home was a castle-like structure with pointed roofs done in green and purple, or as he calls it, "grurple. " Bridging the area between the purple district and the brown district sat the mighty Logwarts castle, home of the Logfellas. This build surprised pretty much everyone, consisting mostly of granite and yet still somehow managing to look good. Beef's home was slightly south of the main mesa area, which had run out of space given his late start. His home was a space station inspired by No Man's Sky and the film "The Martian. " To the west lived iJevin, who opted to build a full castle complex just off of the mesa instead of building in either of the residential districts. The green industrial district was home to Impulse's super chunk of farms, a single chunk stacked top to bottom with every farm he could think of. It was also home to the first community farming area, which was eventually abandoned in favor of a new one in the yellow farming district. Early in the season mini-games were based in the Dangland area until Doc and Etho's seasons both reached a relatively premature conclusion. As a result the orange entertainment district on the mesa went largely unused until mid-season, when it became home to Mumbo's Death Star, Tango's Tangler, Tango's Rooster Booster, False's Elytra maze and Xisuma's Hungry Hungry Hermits. Beneath the orange district was a big sphere carved out from the earth by Xisuma with much outside help, serving as a larger version of Mumbo's Death Star for flying around and catching things midair. ( NB: I suspect that this project was a test run for the Big Dig that would follow in S5. ) Also located in the orange area were False's sheriff's office and TFC's saloon. In the center of the map was the white district, home of Scar's courthouse, Welsknight's office building, Xisuma's map room, Joe's library and Welsknight's Post office. Going beyond the Mesa there were several large scale bases of note. The most well-known is probably Xisuma's Octovoid, located just off of the mesa, which he created in a series of timelapse loaded "epicsodes" around an ocean monument. Also in the ocean was False's "False Labs", a late-season futuristic build in the very far northern reaches of the map. Joe's field of dreams to the southwest of the mesa was a huge farm of the agricultural variety complete with enormous wheatfield, barn and farmhouse. Joe also created a terra cotta army with observers for heads, naming each soldier after one of his Patrons. Close to Joe's farm was Welsknight's Dwarven Halls, a large structure built into the mountains. Beef created a small farm community to the far southeast towards the end of his series. Cubfan created a very large charged creeper farm with 324 slots for creepers, which he used to stock his mob head shop in the brown district. Tango built the Iron Titan again, this time offshore close to the southern residential district. Falsesymmetry built a little squid farm to the southeast of the mesa in the middle of a desert, eventually evolving it into an arabic-style temple complex. The Hermits all worked together to create a Christmas area to the immediate west of the mesa. Tango led the charge in building the nether hub, with some assistance from Scar. It was a small scale replica of the mesa, with each section done in colored wool and blue glass rivers running between them. While paths splitting off from the hub were substantially decorated, there were no large scale nether bases unlike the ones we saw in S3 and S5. The end was the domain of Cubfan, who repeatedly respawned the obsidian pillars to farm resources for his volcanic biome in the overworld. Cub also hid the exit portal underneath a layer of end stone and built a big ring around the central end island so that Hermits could walk up to any of the teleportation nodes to the outer islands. Story Arcs and Events With all of the Hermits packed so tightly together in a single biome, Season 4 was bound to be full of stories. There were many smaller story arcs but the main one was the saga of the Logfellas. Rendog built a log shop early in the season. He asked Xisuma to create a lumber farm for him. Once Xisuma got involved they decided to create a monopoly on saplings on the server so that all Hermits would be forced to buy wood from them. The pair took on a rather mafia-like attitude, sneaking around, making threats, splashing diamonds around on Joe's sculptures, buying up land in the already over-built brown district and reselling it at exorbitant prices, and claiming to be taking orders from a mysterious "Logfather" who was never seen on screen. Mumbo took action by creating the Super Secret Sapling Storage Society, a vault where Hermits unaffiliated with the Logfellas could store their hoarded saplings. Cub and Tango took action as well, creating a separate tree farm which was frequently sabotaged, both by Minecraft bugs and by the Logfellas. Cubfan and Iskall would eventually form the Birchfellas, selling black market wood and wood accessories out of a former horse emporium in the brown district which Cub converted into Wood World. Not to be outdone, the Logfellas recruited Python into their ranks to serve as a sneaky snake in the grass double agent. They bribed Sheriff False to look the other way. Cleo's Hermiton Herald (v. 2) reported on all the goings on, although False would sabotage Cleo's Herald ads to make it seem like she was reporting fake news. All of this came to a head in the trial of the Logfellas at the courthouse created by Scar in the white district. Scar served as judge, Wels as an attorney representing the state, and Doc served as Bailiff. Despite their attempts to bribe pretty much everyone involved, the Logfellas were found guilty of... assorted crimes and misdemeanors. They were forced to lead the assembled Hermits to the location of the mysterious Logfather, who turned out to be a small white bunny that was rapidly dispatched by Iskall. Xisuma, Ren and False were all jailed in cells built by Falsesymmetry underneath her sheriff's office. False would break out within a few hours using a pick she had secretly hidden in the build, although her badge was given to Docm77. Xisuma and Ren would be sprung from jail about a day later when Python donned a Cubfan head and drank an invisibility potion to sneak into the jail and release them. With the influence of the Logfather removed, the Logfellas turned over a new leaf block and made all of their log supplies available free of charge. But this isn't all that happened during Season 4. Ren and Xisuma actually forged their friendship very early in the season, when Xisuma built an enormous chicken pooping out diorite on top of Ren's starter home after mistakenly thinking that Ren was the one who hated diorite, rather than Iskall. This prank would be redone in S6 when Iskall would create a diorite pooping chicken in a Grian costume on top of False's base. The duo of Tango and Impulse became known as DERP quite early on as well, spending their livestreams on the new site "" (now known as Mixer) catching mobs and delivering them to various Hermits throughout the mesa and beyond. Impulse would ramp things up even further by building a ghast catcher in the nether, meaning that no mobs outside of the big bosses were out of their reach. Of course Cubfan would then outdo them by accidentally summoning multiple dragons at once due to a bug, and then leading most of them into unloaded chunks of the End so that they wouldn't become a hazard to Hermits passing through. Evil Xisuma made his return for Xisuma's 500th episode. Accompanied by several withermen (Xisuma's patrons), they trashed a backup of the server in a big posse of destruction and diorite. But when Evil X tried to capture Xisuma and banish him until episode 666, he wound up falling into his own trap. A mystery caught the fancy of many of the Hermits when an army of pumpkin-headed armorstands was discovered emerging from False's jellyfish, marching steadily across the server and curiously peeking at various builds. They eventually found that TFC was the culprit behind the pumpkinhead invasion, but due to his very low profile it took them some time to figure it out. New versions of Minecraft served as storyline fodder for multiple episodes. Early in the season Tango, Impulse and Cub all attempted to build different types of elytra launchers, resulting in each of them experiencing kinetic energy in assorted hilarious ways. Eventually they all settled on using Xisuma's specially-crafted X-bows for getting around in the air. When shulkers were released, the quest for shulker boxes dominated everyone's episodes for several weeks. When the exploration update dropped, the Hermits sought out woodland mansions. Another Hermitcraft tradition of the derpy kind followed an offserver collab between Iskall, Rendog and the Zipkrowd crew playing the Tower Clash minigame. Iskall was inspired to create a MOBA of his own, and teamed up with Rendog to create the first Moba Lisa about 1500 blocks from the mesa. They drafted in Etho to work on the redstone for the item pickup points. Iskall worked on the orc side of the build while Ren took on the elf side, creating yet another lore block in the form of "lazuli crystals. " The Moba Lisa would not be completed during Season 4. The Hermits did discuss copying and pasting the chunks into the Season 5 map so that work on it could continue, but this idea was abandoned. Iskall was a driving force in another major event which would have a lasting impact on the future of the server. Mumbo had been keeping to himself for years following several issues in Season 2 where his fans attacked other Hermits for assorted reasons. Iskall made a point of reaching out to Mumbo, resulting in several collabs of him teaching Mumbo to terraform and playing Mumbo's minigames. It is from this point that Mumbo finally started inching his way back into regular collabs with the rest of the Hermits, without which we wouldn't have Architech today. The fans got worried a couple of times when Welsknight was briefly deployed to Iraq and Scar had to take an extended leave of absence for surgery. Both, quite obviously, survived to craft another day. Ren and Iskall were the bromance of note, recording several mine-and-chat podcasts and teaming up to take on Sir Doc and Princess Etho over in the Dangland. A prank war broke out between Tango and Iskall which built up to one of the more legendary Hermit pranks across all of the seasons. Tango mistakenly introduced Iskall to his fans as Norwegian. Iskall took it upon himself to correct Tango's error by building an enormous Swedish flag over Tango's castle during a livestream. Tango, of course, retaliated. He created a large box in front of Iskall's base containing 4000 anvils, faced with the Danish flag and topped with redstone blocks which would activate as soon as Iskall landed on the thing or mobs spawned on top. Anvils rained down, Iskall giggled, we giggled, and nobody messed with Tango ever again. False was also quite the prankster. One of her notable ones involved Cub and Cleo's wool farm, perched above the brown district on a rainbow glass bridge. False decked out the area surrounding the build to turn it into Mario Kart's rainbow road, complete with warp pipes, mushrooms and a flying ship. Several Hermits would record episodes where they tried to solve Tango's "Tangler" series of brain teasers. Most completed them all in about an hour or two, although poor Scar got stuck in the Tangler for nearly eight hours. A supercut of all the Tangler episodes except for Scar's is included in the Recap playlist at the top of this post. Late in the season, Falsesymmetry, Cubfan and Scar got together to build the secret 5K Club for Hermits who had flown more than 5000 blocks via elytra over the course of the season. ( NB: My own recurring "Under 100k Club" posts here in the subreddit take their name from the 5K Club. ) The season closed out with one final story arc courtesy of Rendog. Based around Pokemon Go, Hermitron Go was an item collection mini-game spanning the entire server. Ren would name items in groups of nine item "tribes" and hide them in booster packs across the server. Hermits who found Hermitrons could display them and trade them at the Hermitron hall, where each Hermit could decorate their own display area. Some were more rare than others and points were gained when any Hermit completed a full tribe. Hermitron would eventually be made into a mod and included in Iskall's Foolcraft modpack. Off-Server Events During Season 4 the traditions of separate FTB modded servers and UHC events slowly faded away. The Hermits did release another homebrewed modpack ("HermitPack") and ran a separate server showcasing it. Iskall also started his first Foolcraft server towards the end of S4, which was not an official Hermit project but might as well have been as the whitelist consisted of Hermits plus future Hermits Bdubs and Stressmonster. They had two UHCs, one of the using a light modpack. They also ran the unique adventure-PVP hybrid called "Hermit Wars, " where teams of Hermits tried to kill each other in a custom world designed by Iskall's build team with some help from Scar, Rendog and Stressmonster. The Fandom and Closing Thoughts The biggest change in the Fandom was of course the emergence of the Recap, which had developed in fits and starts during S3 but only found a consistent production team in the form of ZloyXP & Pixlriffs shortly after the start of S4. The Hermits embraced the Recap, going so far as to refer Beef to it for a catchup on what happened on the server prior to his late start. Fueled by the slow fadeout of Google+ and the addition of all of the Kingdomcraft peeps, the subreddit went from 6800 subs at the start of the season to 9500 at the end. S4 has been named by several of the Hermits as their favorite season other than the current one. They seemed to all enjoy how the mesa encouraged them to work together and collaborate. The storylines that they created during the season were most certainly the prototypes from which many of the S6 events evolved. In fact, I would argue that the majority of the S6 meta, from the layout of the main island to the heavy focus on team collabs and story arcs can be attributed to the Hermits' mutual enjoyment of Season 4 combined with the equally strong influences of Grian and Doc. Thanks for reading and all the support on the History of Hermitcraft series so far! The comments and feedback have been really awesome and unexpected considering that these are long texty posts. I hope to be back with Season 5 before the end of the week.
